Declaration of Occupation

Site
Beigan Mabiwan
Due to geopolitical reasons, Beigan in Matsu became an important military base during the Cold War. The ebb and flow between land and sea, with the coastline as the boundary, represents a continuous tug-of-war between natural and human forces. When human intervention began, a military airport runway was constructed, the mountain was leveled, and land reclamation was carried out to extend the runway. Through coastal sedimentation, Mabiwan, extending from the old military airport in Beigan, became a bay formed by “natural” processes influenced by “human” activities.
In opposition to human actions is nature. While it might seem that humans can conquer nature, nature is actually reclaiming its territory at an imperceptible pace. “Occupation” is essentially a process of ecological succession and power struggle. Humanity constantly seeks to control resources and land, but ultimately, everything returns to nature.
After the harvest of mussels, the discarded mussel shells accumulate along the coast of Matsu at low tide. By constructing a process from mussel farming to the reuse of discarded shells, involving collection, cleaning, sun-drying, high-temperature calcination, crushing, and sieving, the shells are turned into building materials. These materials, once incorporated into structures, will eventually degrade over time and decompose back into organic matter, returning to nature. Through the differing strengths of these building materials, a state of erosion and disintegration occurs over different time scales, establishing a system where man-made structures transition into natural ecosystems.
