Walk into Hualieny

Site

Chongde , Hualien County

In the past, Hualien was called the “back country” due to its late development and location behind a mountain range, which created challenges in tourism and transportation. Today, “back country” evokes not just the landscapes, but also tourism symbols, simplifying its rich context.

To me, Hualien’s essence lies in the unique proximity between mountains and sea, creating distinct weather, light, moisture, sounds, and spatial sensations. I aim to reshape perceptions of Hualien by emphasizing these sensory experiences over symbols.

My design is located in Chongde, at the northern end of the rift valley plain, where the Central Mountain Range and Pacific Ocean are nearly aligned, paralleling major transportation routes.  I aim to connect these four parallel lines within a 400-meter span, condensing Hualien’s spatial experience into an architectural scale.

An overpass links the old station, existing and new platforms, creating a continuous path from mountains to coast. Using local concrete and stainless steel, the structure blends with gray rock walls, coastline, and infrastructure, incorporating diffused sunlight, subtle winds, and occasional train rumbles.

Through this path between mountains and sea, people can rediscover Hualien.
